Nicolas Jaar is the Essential Mixer of the Year
This is lazy like Sunday morning, blood-stirring like a Summer evening, superb for staying home with a rainy weather – it's like Mona Lisa, staring at you, regardless of the perspective you've chosen to look at it. There aren't enough played out metaphors to describe the masterful Essential Mix from the 'Essential Mixer of the Year' – Nicolas Jaar.
There's been some spectacular Essential Mixes in 2012. The Gaslamp Killer got down with his first ever mix for the legendary BBC 1 Radio show. It was a first time for Hardwell as well – the Essential Mix by the Dutch DJ represented the young electronical dance music generation with a successful appearance. There were exceptional mixes from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Hot Chip, Carl Cox and the 'Young Stars' who took over: Madeon, Porter Robinson, Otto Knows and Disclosure.
So a great all-around year for Pete Tong's radio program. However, Nicolas Jaar exceeded everyone:
“The mix was chosen by a panel of expert judges, including Pete Tong and the Friday Night Dance Music Marathon team,” the BBC announced recently. “The judges thought that Jaar’s mix was bold, brave and timeless. It mixed Aphex Twin with string quartets, Ricardo Villalobos with Marvin Gaye, it had Beyonce unplugged and it had Jay Z playing golf!” As if that wasn't eccentric enough, Jaar threw N*SYNC into the mix, alongside cuts of Feist, his own album 'Space is Only Noise' and the New Yorker’s critically acclaimed Sneaky Sound System remix. “I’ve watched Jurassic Park twice in my life – once when I was six and the second time a couple of weeks ago”, the 22-year old commented when the mix first aired. “It inspired me to think about how gaps in time change our way of perceiving”.
