A$AP Yams has died

A$AP Mob co-founder A$AP Yams, real name Steven Rodriguez, has died at the age of 26.

He was a brains behind Harlem’s critically acclaimed rap collective A$AP Mob, his real name was Steve Rodriguez. He was 26.

Details of his death have not yet been released, however fellow A$AP crew members and artists including Drake, A-Trak and Ryan Hemworth have paid tribute to Yams, a well-respected personality and tastemaker, on social media.

The Harlem-based A$AP mastermind had been instrumental in the success of A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg since adding them to the collective he founded alongside Bari and Illz in 2007. In 2011, his managerial skills helped Rocky secure a $3 million contract with Sony/RCA subdivision Polo Grounds Music, which saw the group’s A$AP Worldwide label established.

In a statement released today, RCA Records wrote: “All of us at RCA Records are shocked and saddened to hear of the death of A$AP Yams. As one of the creative forces behind A$AP Worldwide, Yams’ vision, humour and dedication to the members of A$AP Mob will always be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
